The polka dot jersey worn by Lucien Van Impe in 1975, when he won the Mountains classification in the Tour de France, is one of the most iconic symbols in cycling. The jersey, manufactured by Le Coq Sportif, was designed with the colors white and red because these were the colours used for the wrappers of Poulain chocolates, the sponsor brand of the jersey and the award. Initially, many cyclists did not agree with its bold and eye-catching design, and Van Impe himself complained bitterly, saying he felt like a clown. However, it quickly became a popular symbol among fans and remains a legendary emblem of the Tour de France, representing perseverance
